A safety car or pace car is a car which limits the speed of the cars on the track when the track is under caution conditions. If an incident takes place on track, yellow flags may be put out for that sector or turn.

However, if the incident may block the track, or leaves a lot of debris on track, the Safety Car may be deployed, to slow the drivers down while the marshals clear up.

Behind the Safety Car, drivers must not overtake and remain in position. This usually cools down brakes and tyres quite a bit, so to warm them up to optimum, drivers will often do burnouts and swerve from side to side, like with the formation lap. After all the debris is cleared, Race Control will give a signal that the Safety Car is coming in.

When the SC peels into the pit lane, drivers will get up to racing speed, and when the next lap starts, green flags will be shown and the race resumes! After the track is clear, Race Control will notify to all the teams, who in turn inform the drivers by team radio. As green lights go out on the next lap, the race resumes. Aston Martin has made their debut in proving the Safety and Medical Cars. The technical directive issued by Formula 1 to reduce levels of automation in pitstops has given teams an unwelcome period of adjustment.

Although safety was the primary goal, it has already had a significant impact on the title race and puts extra pressure on teams to deliver as the season reaches the business end. On a regular lap, an F1 car will take Turn 3 in Canada at roughly kph; under the SC, however, they do only 45 kph. But it's not just the cornering speeds that are limited under the Safety Car, it's also acceleration and top speed.
