What is the difference between a shark fin and a dolphin fin

According to experts, sharks can get right up to the surf zone and it's not uncommon to see a dorsal fin sticking out of the water. Sightings increase during the summer time as our vacation season coincides with their migratory patterns, says Bryan Fluech, of the Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant at the University of Georgia.

But whether or not you've actually spotted a shark or a different marine animal can be hard to tell. Here's some tips on knowing if you're in the presence of an actual shark. Sharks are most often confused for dolphins but usually can be told apart by their distinctive dorsal fins, according to Michelle Passerotti, Fish Biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Apex Predators Program. This is a seal. Very good to know as I spend so much time in the water and can kayak for miles with dolphin.

But when swimming I can get confused. Would like to know if you think dolphins are aware that their dorsal fins are visible to people when they surface…and do they surface at times just so they can be visible to people.. In other words can they choose when they want to be seen or opt to stay under for long periods of time when they do not want to be noticed?

Dolphins, and other mammals, are warm blooded, give birth to live young, nurse their young, are born with hair, and breathe air. Sharks, like other fish, have gills to remove oxygen from the environment, are cold blooded, and have scales.
